Racism is rising in Australia

Right now, racism and anti-migrant fear are moving back into the centre of our politics. Language that dehumanises migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum is becoming normalised and it’s already impacting our community.

At the ASRC, we are seeing people who came here seeking safety made to feel like they don’t belong. Fear is being amplified and we cannot afford to let it grow.

That’s why we are launching this critical 7-day appeal. Together with the support of the Australian Council of Social Service and Democracy in Colour, we are leading national research to understand what’s driving this surge in racism and how to challenge it.

This work will start next week and will create practical, open-source tools to help communities, advocates and everyday Australians push back against hate and defend a fair, multicultural Australia.

This moment matters

The conversations happening right now will shape the future of this country.

If we don’t act, fear and division will continue to grow.

But if we get this right, we can shift the narrative, bring people together and protect the values that make Australia worth believing in.

What you’re funding

Your donation will fund urgent national research to understand the narratives driving racism and develop the messaging needed to counter them.

This will become a practical, open-source toolkit used by community groups, advocates and organisations across the country. Giving people the language and confidence to challenge racism in everyday conversations, media and public debate.

We’ve done this before

In 2015, ASRC’s Words That Work research helped transform how Australians talk about people seeking asylum, equipping advocates across the country with language that shifted the national conversation and helped drive powerful campaigns like Kids Off Nauru.

We know what it takes. This is the next step, and you can be part of it.

What kind of country do we want to be?

When fear grows louder, the answer must be people coming together.

If you believe in a fair, multicultural Australia built on compassion, courage and welcome, this is the moment to act.
