The power of welcome
Maryam* was just 22 when she came to Australia. While representing her country at an international soccer tournament, she spoke publicly about atrocities against her people. When she returned home, her family had disappeared and her own life was in danger. She was forced to leave, eventually arriving in Australia alone, with no work rights, Medicare, income or safety net.
But when Maryam came through our doors, she was welcomed.
She received food, healthcare and practical support, and help to secure her work rights.
Today, Maryam has a permanent, full-time job. She is working, independent and building her life in Australia.
That is the power of welcome. It gives someone the support they need to stand on their own feet and begin again.
